How job posting dates work
Most companies publish jobs through an applicant tracking system (ATS), and the ATS records when each posting went live. Greenhouse keeps a first-published date alongside an updated date that changes whenever the posting is edited. Lever records the date a posting was created. Ashby records the date a job was published to the company's board. SmartRecruiters and Workday expose similar release and start dates.
Job boards usually show the newest of these dates, or the day they last imported the listing. A small edit, a repost or a board refresh can make a posting that has been open for two months read as “2 days ago”. This checker reads the dates from the ATS itself and shows the first-published date and the last update separately. For pages outside the big platforms, it uses the posting date the page publishes for search engines.
Why a listing can read as closed
When the ATS no longer has the posting, or the company's page answers “not found”, the listing has been closed or taken down. A posting whose stated end date has passed reads as closed too. If a page carries no posting date at all, we say the date is unknown rather than guess.
